How to Prevent Cataracts

 In Uncategorized

What are cataracts exactly? Well, they occur when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy. This often results in blurriness, light sensitivity, and can even lead to complete vision loss. Our Provo optometrists will do their best to help you if you are experiencing cataracts but there are several things you can do for preventative measure. Although cataracts usually affect people later on in life, there are several things you can do to help now.

Wear Sunglasses When Outside

Exposing your eyes to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause great damage and is a definite risk factor for cataracts. When out in the sun, wear sunglasses with 100% UV blocking. Hats are also great for physically blocking sunlight from your face.

Stop Smoking and Minimize Alcohol Intake

Smoking cigarettes harms your body in a number of ways but it has been linked to increasing your chances of developing cataracts. If you are addicted to cigarettes, quitting will not only help your eyes but the rest of your body as well. Alcohol is fine but only in moderation as excessive alcohol consumption can lead to an abundance of health issues, including a greater chance of getting cataracts.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating right will help you out in many facets of your life but it’s also key for cataract prevention. The main reason is obesity. Being obese is a risk factor and staying within a healthy weight is important not only for your eyes but for other organs as well. There are also several nutrients that you can get through your food that will help keep your eyes healthy such as: vitamin E, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids. You can find these nutrients in foods like eggs, nuts, leafy greens, and fresh fruits and veggies.

Regular Eye Exams

You should be getting regular eye exams, regardless of whether or not you’re worried about cataracts. It’s the only way to make sure that your eyes are receiving the constant attention they deserve. It is however, the first thing you should do if you are experiencing vision problems. If you have a cataract, fast treatment is essential in ensuring that the problem does not worsen down the road.

Follow this advice and your eyes will thank you, we promise. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding cataracts or other eye issues, please let one of our Provo optometrists know that we can answer any questions or concerns you have.
