What is the difference between LASIK and ICL?

It can get tricky to decipher all the information available on the internet about vision correction surgery. We are here to help you along your journey and help you understand one of the biggest questions surrounding vision correction surgery… “What is the difference between LASIK and ICL?”

What is LASIK?

Simply put, LASIK is a procedure in which a laser reshapes the cornea (the front part of the eye) to correct your prescription. LASIK is the most widely used procedure for vision correction, and because of its popularity, you may hear about it often enough to feel most comfortable with LASIK.

What is ICL?

ICL, on the other hand, is not as popular as LASIK. However, it is a procedure for anyone who is not a good LASIK candidate or has a higher-than-average prescription. The ICL procedure involves inserting a lens implant into the eye, behind the iris, and in front of the natural lens to correct your prescription. The ICL is made out of a material called Collamer. Collamer works in harmony with your eyes.

Is LASIK or ICL better?

LASIK and ICL are refractive eye surgeries that correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Both LASIK and ICL have their advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of LASIK:

  •  LASIK is a non-invasive procedure.
  •  LASIK is a quick 10-minute procedure.
  •  You can return to normal activities the day after LASIK.
  • LASIK is not a good option for people with dry eye or who have a prescription over -12.00.

Advantages of ICL:

  • ICL, being a lens implant, does require a small incision in the eye.
  • ICL does not worsen dry eye because it does not remove any tissue from the cornea.
  • The procedure only takes 30 minutes.
  • Studies have shown a 99% success rate for ICL surgery.

Disadvantages of LASIK:

  • Not everyone qualifies for LASIK. The only way to know if you are a good LASIK candidate is to schedule a free LASIK consultation at Utah Valley Eye Center.
  • If you have dry eyes, LASIK can make dry eyes worse without proper treatment beforehand.

Disadvantages of ICL:

  • ICL costs more than LASIK.
  • ICL, being a lens implant, requires a small incision in the eye. For this reason, ICL surgery is considered more invasive than LASIK.

Every patient has different expectations and needs. Patients should consult their eye surgeon to know the best option for their condition. Utah Valley Eye Center offers free LASIK and ICL consultations for patients who want to see if they are good candidates for these surgeries.
