Recovering from Lasik

 In Uncategorized

Just like there is from other surgeries, lasik has a healing and recovery process. For a majority of people recovery is fast and they can return to normal activities within a day or two. However the healing process can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. During this time your vision will gradually improve.

The first 24 hours

There will be some mild discomfort after surgery when the topical anesthesia wears off. This is normal and your doctor will give you instructions and a pain reliever if necessary. Be sure to rest your eyes and take it easy for the rest of the day after your surgery. If you’re experiencing any severe pain call your doctor immediately.

The first month

You should have an appointment scheduled with your doctor so they can examine your eyes to make sure your recovery is going smoothly. It is also important to make sure you resist the urge to rub or touch your eye, doing this can disturb your healing corneal flap. This includes applying eye makeup, application brushes, or eye creams. Stay away from contact sports or anything else that puts your eyes at risk of being poked. Avoid contaminated water like hot tubs, the ocean, lakes, or swimming pools for at least a week after the surgery.

3-6 months after

During this time your eyes will still be recovering so go to all of your follow up appointments. This way your doctor can monitor your recovery and your general eye health. Also remember if you have severe nearsightedness it may take longer for your eyes to heal. Your doctor should provide a recovery plan if needed, this maye include wearing glasses for a short period of time as your eyes heal.
